Japanese name: ハナヒリノキ (鼻嚏木)
Scientific name: Eubotryoides grayana var. grayana

Eubotryoides grayana var. grayana

[Overview]
A deciduous shrub 50–150 cm tall, found on dry, infertile ground in the mountains.
It branches freely.
The leaves are simple and alternate, elliptic, 3–10 cm long and 1.5–5.5 cm wide, with sparse stiff hairs on both surfaces.
The leaf margin has hairy serrations.
A raceme 5–15 cm long at the branch tip bears many downward-facing flowers.
There is a bract at the base of each flower stalk, and the axis of the inflorescence is hairy.
The flowers are pale green and urn-shaped, with a shallowly 5-lobed tip.
The fruit is an oblate capsule.

[Uses]
It is a poisonous plant, and the powdered leaves were once used as an insecticide.

[Notes]
The Japanese name comes from the fact that inhaling the powdered leaves causes sneezing.
