[Overview]
A succulent evergreen perennial or subshrub about 10 cm tall.

The leaves are opposite, ovate to heart-shaped, about 1–3 cm long, succulent and glossy.
The leaf surface has fine papillate projections.
The flowers are about 1.5 cm across and bright reddish purple; what look like petals are staminodes.
The flowers open in the sun.

[Cultivation]

It is somewhat sensitive to cold, but it can overwinter outdoors in regions without frost.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained place, tolerates dryness, and grows well even in poor soil.
It dislikes excess moisture.
It is best kept on the dry side; for potted plants, water thoroughly after the soil has dried, and for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
Fertilizer is not particularly necessary.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
