Spergularia rubra (red sandspurry, "Usubenitsumekusa")

Japanese name: ウスベニツメクサ (薄紅爪草)
Scientific name: Spergularia rubra

Spergularia rubra

[Overview]
An annual or perennial 5–15 cm tall, found in vacant lots and by roadsides.
The stem branches freely from the base; the lower part creeps along the ground and the upper part rises upright.
The upper part of the stem, together with the flower stalks and the outside of the calyx, bears glandular hairs.
Leaves are opposite but appear whorled, linear, 0.6–1.2 cm long and no more than 0.1 cm wide.
The leaf tip becomes needle-like, 0.3–0.8 mm long.
The stipules are triangular, 0.3–0.4 cm long, with the tip divided into 2–3 lobes whose ends extend like tails, and the base is deeply divided and hardly fused.
The flowers are borne singly in the leaf axils and are pale pink and five-petaled.
The fruit is a capsule, and the seeds have projections on the margin.
