Japanese name: ヨツバハコベ
Scientific name: Polycarpon tetraphyllum
[Overview]
An annual 5–15 cm tall, found on sandy ground in harbors and along railway lines.
The stem branches well from the base and spreads along the ground.
The leaves are simple, 4 in a whorl or opposite, obovate, 3–10 mm long.
Dichasial cyme-like inflorescences at the stem tips bear many white flowers about 2 mm long.
The corolla is 5-lobed, and the tips of the lobes are notched.
[History]
First collected in Kobe in 1939.
[Notes]
The Japanese name comes from the leaves growing 4 in a whorl, which distinguishes it from other Hakobe species.
