Bistorta tenuicaulis var. tenuicaulis("Harutorano")
Japanese name: ハルトラノオ(春虎尾) Scientific name:Bistorta tenuicaulis var. tenuicaulis
[Overview]
A perennial 3–14 cm tall, found in the shade of deciduous forests in the mountains.
The rhizome creeps horizontally, and its nodes swell into spheres.
There are basal leaves and stem leaves; the basal leaves are elliptic to ovate-elliptic, 2–10 cm long, entire, with petioles, and the leaf base runs down the petiole to form a wing.
After flowering, large ovate basal leaves appear.
There are 1–2 small stem leaves with short petioles.
A pseudoraceme 1–3 cm long at the tip of a flower stalk that is about as tall as the basal leaves or shorter bears densely packed flowers.
The white calyx is conspicuous and petal-like.
The fruit is an achene enclosed in the calyx, broadly elliptic with 3 ridges.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or by division.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained place, but strong direct sunlight in summer can weaken it, so a cool place with good air circulation and partial shade in summer is suitable.
Protect it from cold wind and frost in winter.
From spring to autumn, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; in winter, water just enough that the soil does not dry out completely.
Apply slow-release fertilizer placed on the soil in spring and autumn.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
