An annual or biennial 30–100 cm tall, found in places such as paddy fields.
Occasionally it is a short-lived perennial without a rhizome.

The stem branches in the upper part.
Leaves are alternate, 5–17 cm long, shallowly to deeply pinnately lobed with a large terminal lobe.
The leaf margins are toothed.
Some leaves have petioles and some do not; on the upper part of the stem the leaf base projects like an ear and clasps the stem.
Leaves on the upper part of the stem may also be simple and undivided.
Racemes bear small yellow 4-petaled flowers.
The fruit is a short silique about 0.3–0.7 cm long and 0.2–0.3 cm wide, oblong-spherical to cylindrical-oblong, often curved.
The fruit stalk is almost as long as the fruit and either spreads horizontally or points downward.
The seeds have fine dot-like projections.
